This Week's Newsletter

Christian participated in two education-focused events this week: an Educators Town Hall at Jake’s Café and a Sheboygan County Public Education Legislative Forum. After a year of school visits, he published his campaign position on strong public education: fund schools predictably, fully support special education, give teachers resources and trust, and hold every recipient of public dollars accountable. He also explained his independent candidacy, shared a yard-sign guessing game, and promoted daily canvassing from Oct. 4–10 across Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Fond du Lac communities. Key dates include an Oct. 8 radio debate, Oct. 10 Veterans Memorial Dedication, and Oct. 12 Chamber Candidate Forum. Absentee ballots are available, and Plymouth and Sheboygan Falls have school referendum questions.

Week in Review

Christian with Educators Tuesday evening, Christian sat down with teachers and school staff at the Educators Town Hall at Jake’s Cafe. The message was consistent: teachers already have a full day, and anything new asked of them has to be weighed against the mandates they already carry. Many also said they feel left out of the decisions that shape their work.

Christian speaking at the forum Wednesday night he took part in the Legislative Forum for Sheboygan County Public Education at the SFHS auditorium, where candidates for State Assembly and Senate shared their views on public education with the community. One thing stood out: the candidates on stage largely agreed on what the priorities should be. The differences are in the details, and that is where the work is. Where Christian landed after both evenings is the main story this week.

Campaign Statement: Strong Public Education

After a year of school visits, the Educators Town Hall, and Wednesday’s forum, Christian has published where he stands. The short version: fund schools predictably, fully support special education, give teachers the resources and trust to teach, and hold every recipient of public dollars accountable.

Fully fund special education. The state requires districts to serve every child, and it should. When it doesn’t cover its share, the cost doesn’t disappear. It lands on local classrooms and local taxpayers.

Make school funding predictable, transparent, and honest. When the state raises revenue limits without raising general aid, Christian says, “that is not restraint. That is a cost shift.” Districts should know what they’ll have before they build next year’s budget.

Give teachers time and trust to teach. Teachers already have a full day. Anything new asked of them should be weighed against what they already carry, and they should have a real seat at the table.

Hold every public dollar accountable. Public schools serve every child. Private schools offer alternatives. Both should answer for the public money they receive, and taxpayers should be able to see what it costs.

Independent, in Plain Words

You’ll hear questions about what “Independent” means. Here is an answer you can use at the door, at work, or across the table.

If someone asks: “What does it mean to be Independent?”

John_Nelson.jpeg Christian is running as an Independent, with no party behind him. The people who know his work best say so. John Nelson, who serves with him on the Sheboygan County Board, wrote that Christian is “not beholden to either of the major political parties.” Judge him by how he has served, not by a label.
