The Sheboygan Press recently asked the candidates for Wisconsin State Senate District 9 about why they are running, their priorities, the biggest challenges facing the district, how they would work with people who disagree with them, and what accountability would look like.
Christian Ellis's responses centered on a straightforward approach: listen to the community, focus on problems rather than party politics, work toward practical solutions, and be accountable for the decisions made in office.
Below is a summary of Christian's responses to the questions in the candidate questionnaire.
Why I'm Running
Christian described his decision to run as an Independent as a commitment to putting the community before party politics.
His focus is on representing the people of the district, listening to their concerns, and working on practical solutions rather than approaching state government through a partisan lens.
My Priorities
Christian identified three areas as priorities:
Affordability and the cost of living
Families and individuals are feeling pressure from rising costs, including property taxes, housing, health care, and other everyday expenses. Christian pointed to the need to address the burden on taxpayers while also making sure local communities have the resources they need.
Education and workforce opportunities
Christian emphasized strong public education and opportunities that help people build successful careers and strengthen the local workforce.
Government trust and accountability
Christian said people should be able to understand how their elected officials make decisions and should be able to hold those officials accountable for their actions.
The Biggest Issue Facing the District
Christian identified the gap between rising costs and people's ability to keep up as a central challenge.
For families, that can mean pressure from property taxes, housing costs, health care expenses, and other everyday necessities.
His response connected affordability to the broader question of whether state government is helping communities address the costs and challenges they are experiencing locally.
Working With People Who Disagree
Christian's approach to disagreement starts with focusing on the problem rather than the personalities involved.
He described looking for common ground, building coalitions, and finding practical solutions that can move an issue forward.
As an Independent, Christian sees independence as important to that process. He believes compromise can be part of how durable solutions are built, while still being clear about the principles and priorities guiding a decision.
Accountability
Christian said an elected official should be accessible and transparent.
That means explaining votes and decisions, being honest about tradeoffs, and giving people a clear understanding of why a decision was made.
For Christian, accountability also means remembering who elected you. His approach is to put the community before party politics and remain answerable to the people he represents.
What This Means in Practice
These answers reflect the approach Christian wants to bring to the State Senate:
Listen before deciding.
Understand what people and communities are experiencing before deciding what government should do.
Focus on the problem.
Work on the substance of an issue rather than making disagreements personal or partisan.
Look for practical solutions.
Build common ground where it exists and work with people who may not agree on everything.
Explain the decision.
Be transparent about votes, decisions, tradeoffs, and results.
Stay accountable to the community.
Put the people of the district ahead of party politics.
